Our History

2019

1985

1985 After a group of community pastors joined forces with the same issue – community hunger – WestAid was established under the Westside Ministerial Alliance and housed in Arlington Heights Christian Church.

2019

1987

WestAid relocated to Ridglea Presbyterian Church on Camp Bowie Blvd.

2019

2000

WestAid relocated to the JPS Viola Pitts Como Health Center.

2019

2001

Following time initially as a program under the Ministerial Alliance, and later as part of United Community Centers and Catholic Charities, WestAid became a stand-alone 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

2019

2012

In October WestAid moved to 7940 Camp Bowie West. The space provided more visibility, easier access, more space, and added flexibility for hours of operation and volunteer opportunities.

2019

With each move, the need for what we do has grown, and once again it was time to start looking for a bigger location that would allow us to offer more resources and to better serve the families who come through our doors.

2024

2020

COVID-19 brought our relocation project to a screeching halt. The existing interior space was reconfigured for inventory and pre-packaging groceries for sidewalk distribution. This allowed us to meet increased demand, serving more families during the pandemic with an added degree of safety for clients, staff and volunteers.

2024

2022

WestAid’s search for a new, larger space was revived with a new sense of urgency.

2024

2023

Early in the year, a space a few doors down on Camp Bowie West became available. Thanks to the generosity of a local foundation, we were fortunate to arrange funding in time to secure the location and begin plans to renovate the new space to meet WestAid’s needs. In December we moved into the new location at 7928 Camp Bowie West. Our new home has ample storage and a roomy two-aisle pantry space. WestAid is now able to serve more families weekly– currently 200-300 – and to offer households served the opportunity to shop in the pantry twice monthly.

FROM OUR COMMUNITY:

“They give you the basics like bread and eggs, they distribute a great variety of choices, even meat. Last week I got a pork loin roast and a whole chicken. They even gave out bags of blueberries, walnuts, almonds. Seriously, if you find yourself needing help with groceries, go to WestAid.”
